Mortal Shell II Beginner Guide

Mortal Shell II punishes recklessness and rewards observation. These ten fundamentals cover everything a new Harbinger needs in the first hours.

1. You are supposed to feel fragile

As the Harbinger you die in one or two hits. That's the design: your safety is your Shell. When ejected, retreat, regroup, repossess.

2. Hardening is your shield

Hardening petrifies you mid-action — even mid-swing or mid-dodge. Use it to trade hits you can't dodge, interrupt your own recovery, or tank one hit while healing. It has a cooldown; don't hold it, but don't waste it.

3. Learn the tells

Every enemy attack has a wind-up tell. Mortal Shell II is about reading them — blocking is rarely the right answer against heavy attacks.

4. Gloom is your most precious currency

Gloom buys Harbinger levels, Shell map reveals (via Zhirelle), and weapon actions. After Balance Patch 1, map reveals cost Gloom too — so every reveal competes with your next level. Decide, don't hoard.

5. Pick Tiel or Proxima first — both are free

Both first Shells get automatic map markers after the prologue. Tiel favors mobility and cloaking; commit to one and learn it before buying more reveals.

6. Beacons are your checkpoints

Cleanse Beacons as you explore — they anchor your respawn and recovery paths. The 'So Fresh, So Clean' achievement tracks cleansing all of them.

7. Dungeons are optional but rich

The world hides 80+ dungeons off the golden path. They contain weapons, Tarstones and upgrades — but you can also skip ones above your current build.

8. Switch Shells freely

Changing Shell doesn't erase progress; each Shell levels separately alongside your Harbinger. A stuck boss often becomes easy with a different body.

9. Ranged sidearms change the math

Crossbows and stranger sidearms let you open fights safely, trigger puzzles, and punish ranged enemies. Unlock several early.

10. Watch for missables

Some achievements are missable — notably the zero-health feat tied to the Tar Golem fight. Check our achievements guide before major bosses.
