Mortal Shell 2 Adaptive Difficulty: Settings & Night Mode

Adaptive Difficulty is optional and works in both directions. It can ease repeated failure, but consistent wins can also make enemies tougher. Check the setting before treating a changed encounter as a build problem.

Where to find the setting

Open Game → Game Settings → Adaptive Difficulty. The September 5 official update introduced it as an experimental option, disabled by default, which you can switch on or off. The September 24 notes add tier indicators; older guides saying there is no on-screen indicator are now outdated.

Why a familiar fight can feel different

The system adjusts enemy damage, health and break resistance in response to wins and deaths; adjustments relax over time. Night Mode does not receive the easing applied when you struggle. It can still become harder. This is not a fixed “easy” preset.

A repeatable way to choose your settings

Before a difficult encounter, note your current Shell, weapon, difficulty setting and whether Night Mode is active. Keep three of these fixed while testing the fourth. Otherwise a stronger weapon and changing enemy values can hide whether your defensive timing improved.

If your goal is learning an attack pattern, keep a consistent setup and practice one response at a time: recognise the wind-up, avoid or defend the attack, then use a short punish. If your goal is simply making progress, enabling the adaptive option is a reasonable experiment. There is no requirement to use the same setting as a video guide.

Still stuck? Separate three different problems

If one hit repeatedly catches you, work on positioning and timing before spending resources. If you survive but cannot punish, test a shorter attack sequence. If the encounter behaves incorrectly—an NPC cannot be used or a boss gets stuck—check the current patch notes instead of treating it as a difficulty issue.

After changing an option, use a familiar encounter as a comparison. Do not judge your whole build from one unusual boss or one attempt. Save a short practice plan below and return to it next session.

What this guide does not claim

The official notes do not provide a universal numeric difficulty multiplier or a guarantee about every trophy condition. This guide does not invent one. Menu wording and patch arrival can differ by platform; confirm the installed version before following a launch-era workaround.
